I work in one of the many charity shops in Machynlleth, and from behind the till you see a diverse cast of characters walk in and out that door you begin to pick up on their characteristics and whether you like it or not some of them open up and tell stories or their opinion on a subject, and typically they carry most of the conversation as due to my autism I find it hard to come with a response so I prefer to observe instead. I am the observer in this space witnessing new or recurring people walking through that door, reacting to the space in various ways. I think bringing this approach to filmmaking would make an interesting breakdown of a subject. Replace me with a camera, and replace the shop with a room; a camera in the room anyone can walk into and talk to (or not say anything, it’s entirely down to how the subject reacts to the space). So the general idea is: create a small room (could be a tent or whatever) and in the that we ask the question we want to to ask the subjects, we could either ask them straight up or take a more experimental approach and plant things (posters, infographics, etc.) in the room which will challenge the subjects and see how they react. This room will be open to the general public, a vox pop in ways, so we can get a larger cast of characters. If the room could be portable we can move it to different areas, in a small town or in the middle of the forest maybe the bizarre nature of it may attract walkers on their trek. The room is more than a set piece it’s a statement.
