Applications for FfS-Dyfi are now closed

We keep the form visible for transparency, but submissions made after 30.11.25 will not be received or stored.

If you have questions, please email James.

Applying for anything involves extraction: your data coming to us so we can see if you’re the right fit. But we aim to do this without extractivism – we aim not to take value from you for our own benefit without any reciprocal obligations to you. Ideally, we’d pay you for the labour of applying, but we don’t have the funds for that this time. So we’ll try and keep it short and sweet, and we’ll start with what makes you eligible or ineligible, so you are best placed to know whether to spend your time on the application. That’s why it’s all in one page, so you can see what’s coming. That’s why we’re going to tell you what we’re asking for upfront, and ask for consent now, and then repeat it at the end of the process, before you hit Submit.

The information you enter into this form is collected for one necessary purpose (to allow us to assess your application to join the FfilmSchool). You’ll have the choice whether to allow your application to be used in James Price’s PhD research into anti-extractivist filmmaking education, and whether and how we might be able to use the story ideas you offer in the form. Your decision on these questions won’t be revealed to the selectors, so there’s no pressure to say yes.

May FfS use the data you submit to assess your suitability for FfilmSchool-Dyfi?

You’ll have the choice to consent whether it can be used for research and for the film we’re making at the end of the form. You’ll also be asked how you’d like to be attributed, or not.

FfS-Dyfi: apply to be a conspirator

Thank you for your interest in being part of FfilmSchool. Please make sure you have read through the website, especially the Participant Information Sheet, so you have a clear idea of what the course involves and how we’ll operate.

conspirator essentials

Before you invest your time and imagination in continuing your application, please be aware there are certain eligibility requirements for participation in the course.

If you haven’t ticked all the boxes above, you are unlikely to be chosen.

That understood, you are welcome to continue your application if you wish.

about you

Name – as you wish FfS to know you

the FfS commitment

FfilmSchool is premised on opening up documentary filmmaking for those that have been underrepresented and excluded. As part of this commitment, we guarantee an interview to all eligible applicants who identify as one or more of the following, and have a significant connection to the Dyfi, Rheidol, and/or Ystwyth watersheds.

Living in a low-income, low-asset household.
d/Deaf, Disabled, and/or Neurodiverse.
(We recognise the social model of Disability and the cultural model of Deafness.)
Having Welsh as first language.
A person of the Global Majority (including Roma and Traveller).
(We use this term rather than Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic (BAME) as we reject centring the white point of view.)

Your self-declaration is trusted and sufficient for this stage of the process.

I identify with one or more of these and have a significant connection to the Dyfi, Rheidol, and/or Ystwyth watersheds:

access & support needs

FfilmSchool is not currently equipped to provide care for adults who would be considered vulnerable under UK law. If you have a care plan or receive community-based support, we can discuss whether participation could be enabled and what adjustments may be possible.

To discuss your access needs confidentially, please .

story idea

FfilmSchool doesn’t ask for any qualifications or experience to take part. Instead we are interested in what you know about and have to say about this place. This isn’t a course where you’ll pursue your own story idea, so much as one where you’ll conspire with others to address an issue that affects this place and the societies and minds that live, and will live, enmeshed with this Land. The idea is that the filmmaking process can be an act of community empowerment, so that decisions are made in a true public community partnership.

On this occasion, we’re conspiring to make a film about the plans being made for this place (and others like it) in order that it can remove more greenhouse gasses from the atmosphere and store them on, in, or under the land and sea. To make sure you have an understanding of what these stories might be please make sure you’ve read the brief, which gives a primer on the (often little known) practices scientists, politicians, and in some cases businesspeople are planning for these lands and seas.

Submit your story

You can submit your story idea in text, video, images, or audio or a combination of these, whatever works best for you. We’re not expecting you to showcase your creative skills, just use the way that suits you to communicate your story.

If you choose to write, we recommend about 400 words, which is about 4 minutes in slow speech. As a neurodivergent creative I find that strict short limits can sometimes be more work than longer ones, so this box is not limited to 400 words.

Please note: We recommend writing your proposal in a separate document and pasting it here when ready. This form cannot automatically save your work.

Video and audio entries can be up to 5 minutes.

FfS practices data minimalism, so each applicant has a requested data budget of 8MB – enough for a 5 minute small-file ecomedia video file. Audio and still images are smaller. See Small File Media guide for advice on compression. You don’t have to use your whole budget!

Please note: we don’t want this to be a technical barrier for applicants. If you’re having difficulty compressing, .

consent & attribution

That’s it! Having gone through the application we’d first of all like to check:

Do you consent for us to use the form to work out if you’re the right fit for FfS-Dyfi?

FfilmSchool would like to acknowledge the work you put into this application in the film we make. You can change your mind on this up to 7th June 2026.

Would you like to be named?

permission to use your ideas?

Bearing in mind that the assessors will not see your response to this question:

In the event of your application being unsuccessful, or if you are unable to take up an offered place,

would you be open to FfilmSchool developing your ideas further, with you acknowledged as the originator?

Please bear in mind that other applicants may submit the same or a very similar idea.

use as research?

FfilmSchool is the practice element of James R Price’s PhD research at Aberystwyth University. Please ensure you have read the participant information sheet before answering this question.

Bearing in mind that the assessors will not see your response to this question, and that you are free to change your mind at anytime until 7th June 2026 with no explanation required,

Do you consent for James R Price to use your submission as research data for his PhD study on anti-extractivist filmmaking education?

James will be writing up the full process of FfS-Dyfi in a PhD thesis, to be submitted before 31st July 2028 at the latest. James commits to allowing you to review any sections featuring your data before submission. You may change your decision any time before submission, but as an indication,

if any of the data in your application is included in James’s thesis would you like to be anonymised or credited?

please check over and when ready click submit

NOTE: If after pressing Submit you can still see this page, then your submission has not yet gone through. Please make sure you have filled in all required fields and try again until you see only a receipt message (you should also receive an email confirmation).
